Forensic accounting involves the application of special skills in accounting, auditing, finance, quantitative methods, research and investigative skills to collect, analyze, evaluate, interpret and communicate financial information that can be presented in a court of law.

Forensic accounting engagements often involve allegations of improper financial activity, including fraud. Improper financial activity can take many forms, but generally encompasses either a taking of assets, or the presentation of financial information that is meant to mislead others. The challenge is documenting, quantifying and presenting information that can prove a theft has occurred, how it happened and how much was lost.
