Business Valuation

Who we serve: Companies, investors and their counsel that need to quantify the value of a business – for example, when a business changes hands or is involved in bankruptcy and litigation, or when an owner is cashing out or preparing an estate plan.

Experience: In addition to accounting and financial expertise, proper valuation requires an understanding of the economic and industry factors that impact a business. Our valuation team has the experience and certifications necessary to address these complexities. We work diligently to uncover the key value drivers of your business and arrive at reasonable, supportable conclusions.

Our approach:

To determine the relevant value, we analyze the business under each of three scenarios –

  1. The income approach values the business based upon the present value of expected future returns on investment, assuming that the business continues to operate.

Depending on the situation, we use the discounted cash flow method, which identifies future earnings, cash flow and the terminal value of the business, and then discounts them to their value at the valuation date. Alternatively, using the capitalization of earnings method, expected earnings are capitalized using a capitalization rate that considers the time value of money, risk and expected growth.

  2. The market approach values the business by comparing it to similar businesses.
  3. The underlying asset approach identifies the value of the business’ tangible and intangible assets minus its liabilities.

Before performing a valuation, we will meet with you to understand the issues, outline the work to be done and then work closely with you to gather the necessary information. We can also testify in any court proceedings.

Our methods are accepted by the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts, Internal Revenue Service and Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice.
