Theft Prevention

When trusted employees misappropriate company funds, missing money isn’t the only worry.

Engagement
A large, privately held company with about $50 million in annual revenue and offices nationwide hired Gleason to investigate an embezzlement. Over a 10-year period, a trusted employee misappropriated approximately $750,000 of company funds. She was caught when her bank alerted our client to a large-dollar corporate check that was deposited into her personal account.

Gleason’s Role
We developed an investigative plan to uncover each instance of theft, assisted the CFO and his accounting staff in the investigation, analyzed the results and recommended changes to the company’s policies, procedures and internal controls to prevent recurrence. We also prepared a detailed, written report of our work for the company’s board of directors.

Results
Based on the thorough investigation, the company was able to document the theft for recovery through its fidelity insurance.

Uncovering the full extent of the theft and deception provided our client with peace of mind that no other employees were involved.

It also enabled management to repay the charities, vendors and shareholders the employee had cheated in committing the fraud.

Thanks to new internal control procedures, the company is confident of preventing future fraud.
